The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is now tasked with identifying individuals, including politicians, business leaders, chiefs, and religious figures, who were involved in or supported past coups. This commitment was highlighted by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu in Parliament, where he passionately discussed the significance of establishing the truth.

During yesterday’s parliamentary session, the Fiji TRC Bill 2024 received approval, with 33 votes in favor and 15 against. The bill equips the commission with the authority to summon those implicated in coup-related events, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of their accounts.

Mr. Seruiratu stressed the importance of the commission’s work, emphasizing that uncovering the truth is vital for accountability. He recalled experiences from 2004, advocating for the release of certain soldiers involved in a previous military event, and urged that the focus should also be directed toward the politicians who orchestrated these actions.

Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women and chair of the TRC steering committee, confirmed that the commission would possess the necessary powers to summon involved individuals. The committee comprises other assistant ministers, all of whom will collaborate with the Prime Minister to oversee the TRC’s implementation.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed optimism, noting that the development of the TRC legislation followed extensive consultations with both victims of political unrest and those responsible for it. He pointed out that there was overwhelming support for establishing the TRC, indicating a collective desire for healing across different communities.

Mr. Rabuka believes that the TRC will facilitate reconciliation and foster an environment for survivors to share their experiences, promoting healing and unity. The commission will operate independently, with its integrity ensured by a mandate stipulated in the legislation.

The formation of the TRC represents a hopeful step towards understanding the past and fostering a tranquil future in Fiji. By encouraging truth-telling and reconciliation, the commission aims to mend societal divisions and cultivate a sense of justice and healing.

The TRC’s work could pave the way for a more unified Fiji, where the past is acknowledged, lessons are learned, and the community can move forward together.
