Fiji’s Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge Set for Transformative $70 Million Makeover

Work is set to commence shortly on the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge, an essential transport link for the Lami corridor, following a $70 million reconstruction initiative funded by the Japanese Government and the Ministry of Public Works. This project represents a significant commitment to improving Fiji’s infrastructure, featuring modern, disaster-resilient engineering elements, including a first-of-its-kind earthquake-resistant design for the country. The new structure will transform the existing two-lane bridge into a four-lane thoroughfare.

Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized the bridge’s critical role in supporting the increasing traffic demands of the Lami industrial zone. He indicated that the project opens the door for future infrastructure developments. At the launch, he stated, “It’s very important to have more than one route in and out of a major urban or city or in areas where there’s key strategic infrastructure,” pointing to the need for alternative pathways to enhance connectivity and traffic distribution.

Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii expressed optimism that the new bridge will stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities. Working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the project is expected to be completed by June 2027. This significant undertaking not only highlights the necessity of enhanced infrastructure but also reflects a commitment to building resilience against natural disasters, aligning with global standards.

Previously, the old bridge, constructed in 1975, experienced considerable wear and is now unable to handle the daily traffic of over 21,000 vehicles safely. With the new bridge, Fiji aims to bolster its economic landscape while ensuring safer transit for its residents.

This ambitious project exemplifies progressive thinking in infrastructure development and the importance of international collaboration in enhancing Fiji’s resilience and economic potential.
