Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has reaffirmed the Fijian government’s dedication to promoting sports tourism, with initiatives spearheaded by Tourism Fiji and the Ministry of Tourism. During a special reception at the Australian High Commission honoring the management team from the St Kilda Australian Football Club, Gavoka noted the increasing passion for sports among both Australian and Fijian populations, highlighting the possibilities for strengthened collaboration in tourism and sports.
Gavoka acknowledged Australia’s ongoing support through the Vuvale Partnership, which aims to enhance bilateral relations. He emphasized the potential to develop the skills of young Fijian football fans, showcasing Fiji’s commitment to cultivating local talent through impactful sports programs.
The St Kilda Australian Football Club’s visit is a testament to advancing sports development while reinforcing the positive relationship between Fiji and Australia through sports diplomacy. Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald, recognized this commitment, expressing the club’s enthusiasm to interact with Fijian communities and focus on joint talent development initiatives that benefit young athletes.
As part of this sports initiative, the St Kilda team is scheduled to visit schools in the Central Division, conducting academy-style programs in collaboration with local authorities, including the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL), to enhance development initiatives.
This emphasis on sports and educational opportunities demonstrates a solid foundation for future collaborations, which promise to deepen relationships between the two countries while offering youth in Fiji valuable experiences and avenues for growth. The amalgamation of sports and tourism presents a significant opportunity for both nations, potentially enriching cultural exchanges and fostering economic benefits for young athletes.
