The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has issued a firm warning regarding price hikes and the sale of compromised goods amidst the country’s preparation for severe rainfall and thunderstorms. Chief Executive Joel Abraham emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for any trader attempting to exploit vulnerable consumers during natural disasters. He noted that those who take advantage of such situations undermine the overall well-being of the community.
To combat unfair practices, the FCCC has been actively conducting market surveillance during and after flooding events. Last month alone, their teams performed 73 surveys, focusing specifically on essential items that are typically in higher demand during disasters. Abraham stressed the importance of consumer vigilance, urging individuals to report any unethical trading behavior.
In addition to these efforts, 26 joint inspections were conducted with city and town health authorities to ensure food safety standards are rigorously upheld. These initiatives align with previous campaigns by the Consumer Council of Fiji, where concerns over unethical practices such as price gouging and the sale of damaged goods were similarly addressed.
As many consumers may be facing challenging economic conditions, it is particularly crucial for traders to adhere to ethical practices. Price increases on essential items like candles or batteries during emergencies are prohibited under the FCCC Act, and violators risk serious legal consequences, including fines.
