Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is expected to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka.
Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne announced that Ilaisa Droasese would take the place of Epeli Momo on the wing, creating an opportunity for Loganimasi to join the bench. Byrne praised Loganimasi’s training efforts, expressing enthusiasm for the Olympic silver medalist’s potential debut.
There has been strong competition for positions within the 23-player squad, with rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni also returning to the lineup. Vocevoce was unavailable for the semi-final victory over the USA due to a family bereavement, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.
Byrne reported that the team’s preparation has been excellent despite the hot and humid weather. He emphasized their focus and organization as they aim to perform well. Training has remained intensive, with players managing a few injuries, including Ravai and Selestino Ravutaumada.
Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula has stood out at fullback as the team directs its attention to the upcoming final against Japan, which is scheduled to start at 10:05 PM.
