Isikeli Basiyalo, a promising young rugby player from Fiji, has been selected to join the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team for the upcoming HSBC Hong Kong Sevens tournament, scheduled for March 28-30. This announcement, made by head coach Osea Kolinisau, marks a significant achievement for the 21-year-old, who recently joined the team alongside fellow player Aisea Nawai from Drua.
Basiyalo, who plays in the forward position, caught the attention of national selectors after Drua head coach Glen Jackson highlighted his potential for the 7s format. “It’s just been three weeks being part of the training squad with my older brothers,” Basiyalo shared, expressing his enthusiasm about the experience and the lessons learned regarding patience, hard work, and teamwork.
The Fijian squad also sees the return of experienced players Manueli Maisamoa and Alusio Vakadranu, complementing a talented roster that features skilled athletes like Jeremaia Matana, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Joseva Talacolo. As the Fijian team prepares to face strong contenders such as the USA, Ireland, and Argentina, anticipation grows not only for their performance in Hong Kong but also for the extended squad members who will be competing in the 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s.
The inclusion of young talent like Basiyalo highlights Fiji’s ongoing dedication to developing the next generation of rugby stars, promising a bright future for Fijian rugby. As these athletes step onto the international stage, they embody the blend of youthful energy and seasoned expertise that has characterized Fiji’s rugby success over the years, igniting hope among fans for continued excellence on the world stage.
