The RFMF Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai expressed his confidence in the legal system following the High Court’s ruling on the “unlawful” dismissal of former FICAC commissioner Barbara Malimali. In an interview with The Fiji Times, he emphasized that while he had not fully reviewed the court’s findings, the application of the rule of law is vital for Fiji.
Major General Kalouniwai highlighted the significance of the appeal process available to the Prime Minister, framing it as a vital component of the democratic framework. He stated, “It’s an opportunity for an appeal by the Prime Minister and his team, so that process is in place and it’s something that I feel is important for Fiji – understanding that the democratic process still exists and it provides an equal opportunity for everyone.”
In response to inquiries about ongoing court cases related to constitutional matters, he noted that the military is closely monitoring these developments, especially with elections approaching. “We are maintaining a situation awareness of what’s happening. That’s important for us – to understand what is happening,” he remarked.
From a security standpoint, he acknowledged the risks associated with the election period, stressing the importance of staying informed to enable the RFMF to make sound decisions when necessary. Major General Kalouniwai’s proactive approach showcases a commitment to uphold democratic processes and ensure stability as Fiji navigates this critical time.
