Fiji’s Rainy Season Ahead: What Farmers Need to Know!

The Fiji Meteorological Services has issued a forecast indicating significant rainfall is expected in sugarcane growing areas from Sigatoka to Penang, with projections of 50–100 mm of rain in these regions during the upcoming month. Areas such as Dobuilevu and Vanua Levu are predicted to receive even higher amounts of rainfall, ranging from 100–150 mm.

The Fiji Sugarcane Climate Outlook highlights a high (75%) chance of receiving these rainfall totals throughout May 2025. As the calendar shifts to June, forecasts suggest a decrease in precipitation, with only 0-25 mm expected in some regions, while others may receive up to 50-100 mm. July forecasts display a similar trend, with anticipated rainfall across various locations.

Looking toward the June to August period in 2025, heavy rains are forecasted, with estimates of 100-200 mm likely from Olosara to Penang, and a potential for 200-300 mm in other sugarcane growing areas in Dobuilevu and Vanua Levu.

As Fiji approaches the conclusion of the 2024–25 tropical cyclone season, the Fiji Met emphasizes the possibility of out-of-season tropical cyclones impacting weather patterns, which necessitates that farmers remain vigilant and prepare adequately for varying weather conditions.

This forecast follows earlier reports predicting substantial rainfall from January to April 2025, indicating a significant shift in moisture levels after a prolonged dry spell marked by less than 100 mm of rain during previous months. Such rainfall not only poses challenges like flooding, but it also brings opportunities for agricultural revitalization. Farmers are encouraged to utilize these conditions for improving crop yields and managing water resources effectively.

With proper preparation and adaptive agricultural practices, the region’s farmers can leverage the impending rainfall for enhanced agricultural productivity, ultimately supporting the essential sugarcane industry in Fiji.
