Fiji’s Political Turmoil: Appeal Process Kicks Off!

The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened yesterday to review the appeal filed by Independent parliamentarian Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of the Fiji First Party by the Registrar of Political Parties.

The Fiji First Party was deregistered on July 1, 2024. ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali recognized the need for the people of Fiji to remain patient as the commission works towards a resolution for the appeal.

“We are pleased that the process is now underway,” she stated. “We look forward to publishing our decision at the conclusion. Until then, we will not be in a position to comment. We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and be patient.”

The ECF is conducting the appeal in its quasi-judicial capacity.
