All police officers in Fiji are now required to participate in a mandatory spiritual enhancement program starting today, March 1, as outlined in a directive from Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe. This initiative aims to promote personal growth and ethical behavior within the police force, with an emphasis on abstaining from actions that could damage the organization’s reputation until March 21.

SSP Vusonilawe stated that the program would enhance work performance by fostering a sense of purpose, resilience, and improved relationships among colleagues. Officers are expected to refrain from consuming kava, alcohol, and cigarettes, and engage in daily prayer sessions at noon. These prayers will focus on significant community policing strategies, such as the construction of a new Police Headquarters, public trust restoration, drug elimination, and unification within local religious bodies.

This approach corresponds with ongoing efforts within the Fiji Police Force to enhance integrity and accountability, particularly following reports of misconduct and corruption in previous years. The spiritual enhancement initiative aligns with broader police reform goals aimed at restoring public confidence in law enforcement, a sentiment echoed in recent discussions regarding leadership accountability and community relationships.

The implementation of these programs is a hopeful step towards fostering a police force that not only fulfills its duties with integrity but also actively seeks to repair and enhance its relationship with the public it serves. As the Fijian police embark on this path, there is potential for a more responsive and community-focused law enforcement model to emerge.
