Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, recently addressed the pressing challenges facing Fiji, reaffirming the government’s dedication to overcoming these obstacles. During his speech in Parliament, he outlined a robust legislative agenda for the year ahead, which includes significant amendments to the 2013 Constitution and the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Kamikamica emphasized the importance of these initiatives in addressing historical grievances since 1987, indicating that the TRC and constitutional reforms are pivotal for achieving sustainable peace within the nation. He expressed a desire to collaborate with all sectors of society, hoping that the People’s Coalition will contribute to crafting a Constitution that truly represents the aspirations of the Fijian people.
In stressing the need for transformational leadership, he echoed the sentiments of President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, advocating for a leadership approach grounded in compassion, equity, and inclusivity—one that places the nation and its citizens above political division. Kamikamica envisions a Fiji where all individuals can prosper together, ensuring that no one is left behind.
This initiative coincides with Kamikamica’s previous emphasis on the necessity of revising the Constitution to bolster democracy and secure citizens’ rights. At the launch of the National Development Plan, he underscored the urgency of translating commitments to freedom and community trust into concrete actions. He also highlighted the importance of stabilizing public finances and improving access to essential services as key priorities for the Coalition Government.
As Fiji navigates a critical period in its quest for unity and stability, Kamikamica’s hopeful outlook and commitment to inclusive governance may serve as a catalyst for progress and reconciliation throughout the nation. With the current climate demanding greater public engagement and accountability from the government, a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders is essential to forge a future characterized by trust and shared prosperity.
