Kadavu continues to be a hub for marijuana production in Fiji, with police reporting the seizure of 3.5 tonnes of cannabis from the island last month. This operation contributed to a total of 4.9 tonnes captured nationwide during March, underscoring the ongoing challenge of drug cultivation in the region.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized the magnitude of the drug crisis, declaring the fight against drugs a “life or death” matter. His commitment includes not only apprehending users but also constructing solid cases against identified kingpins in the drug trade. Commissioner Tudravu’s concerns extend to the substantial illegal profit from such activities, which poses significant risks to the community.

Kadavu has emerged as a focal area for drug-related activities, while regions like Keiyasi, Rakiraki, Levuka, Vunidawa, Navua, and Tavua also reported significant cannabis seizures. As part of a broader effort, authorities detained over 100 suspects and charged 96 individuals with drug-related offenses, emphasizing a systematic approach to disrupt these illicit networks.

Previous operations, particularly under Operation Sasamaki, have yielded impressive results, with earlier reports indicating the identification of numerous marijuana farms and the seizure of large quantities of plants. These operations reflect a unified strategy involving police and community collaboration aimed at enhancing public safety and addressing drug abuse.

As the police force perseveres in its campaign against drug cultivation, there is a sense of hope that continued efforts will foster a safer and healthier environment for all coastal residents and pave the way towards reducing drug-related crime in Fiji. The cooperation between law enforcement and the community continues to be a cornerstone in this fight, inspiring optimism for a successful resolution to the ongoing drug issues.
