The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations (MEPWR) have established a significant new partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing voter registration and encouraging civic engagement among Fijians living abroad. This initiative is particularly timely as the 2026 General Elections approach, ensuring that every eligible Fijian, irrespective of their location, has the opportunity to register and vote.

Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, emphasized the importance of this MoU as a crucial development for strengthening democracy in Fiji. Historically, Fijians residing overseas have encountered challenges in the voting process; this agreement seeks to eliminate those barriers. Mataiciwa assured overseas Fijians that the FEO is committed to working closely with various government entities to increase access to electoral services.

Maritino Nemani, Permanent Secretary for MEPWR, also expressed support for this partnership, highlighting the ministry’s commitment to enabling Fijians abroad to participate meaningfully in shaping the future of their country. His statements underscored the significance of exercising the constitutional right to vote, regardless of one’s location, and affirmed the importance of keeping overseas workers engaged in the electoral process.

The MoU lays down a comprehensive framework for collaboration between the FEO and MEPWR, which includes facilitating the registration of Fijian workers participating in international programs such as the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme and the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme. Key initiatives under this partnership will involve setting up voter registration booths, updating overseas voter registration data, and integrating voter education into pre-departure orientations.

This strategic collaboration represents an optimistic progression for Fijians living abroad, fostering greater inclusivity and ensuring their voices are actively heard within the democratic framework. It acknowledges the essential contributions of Fijians working overseas to the national economy and community, thereby nurturing a sense of connection and accountability to their homeland.

In summary, the partnership between the Fijian Elections Office and the Ministry of Employment stands as a testament to Fiji’s commitment to an inclusive democracy, creating pathways for enhanced engagement and participation in future elections.
