Medical Services Pacific (MSP) has significantly accelerated its HIV detection efforts, conducting over 4,000 point-of-care tests since last year, thereby enhancing accessibility and speed of testing, especially for vulnerable populations. The organization revealed that several tests showed reactive results, which have been sent for further confirmation through laboratory testing. Remarkably, out of these, a high percentage—90 to 95 percent—tend to confirm as positive for HIV.
Taniela Vinaka, the Grants Acquisition and Accountability Manager at MSP, emphasized that the expansion in testing is aligned with the organization’s commitment to ensuring comprehensive access to healthcare services. This commitment is especially evident in MSP’s mobile outreach initiatives targeting at-risk communities.
Vinaka noted, “This point-of-care testing has revolutionized our approach to HIV diagnostics. Previously reliant on blood withdrawal methods, we can now achieve faster turnaround and efficiency in reaching out to those in need.” Beyond HIV and STI testing, MSP’s outreach also includes services related to Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Gender-Based Violence (GBV) assistance, and general awareness programs that address broader community issues.
Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, underscored the significance of clear prevention messages in the fight against HIV. He highlighted that these multifaceted services are vital in addressing the comprehensive health challenges faced by communities daily.
The importance of rapid and accessible testing methods, such as point-of-care tests, has been mirrored across the healthcare sector in Fiji, as seen in similar initiatives in locations like Vanuabalavu and Wainibuka. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to increase HIV testing rates while reducing the associated stigma. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with organizations like MSP, continues to focus on community-based health services and outreach, promoting early detection and effective management of HIV. This collaborative approach is crucial in combating the rising trend of HIV cases and aims to foster a healthier populace through proactive engagement and resource optimization.
