The Fiji Police Force is moving forward with plans to incinerate 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, a significant operation mandated by a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024. The destruction is set to take place at the Dignified Crematorium in Nausori, and police officials anticipate completing the process within five days, although they have a court-mandated timeframe of seven days.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe clarified that extensive preparations for this operation had taken place over several months. He noted that the destruction involves a technical and monitored process of vaporizing the drugs in a furnace—a method recognized globally for its safety and effectiveness in handling hazardous substances.
This operation is not just about disposing of illicit drugs but also underscores the Fiji Police’s commitment to public safety and accountability. Legal representatives of those charged will be permitted to witness the destruction process, ensuring that the operation adheres to principles of transparency. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mesake Waqa emphasized the collaborative effort involving multiple governmental ministries, including Justice, Health, and Environment, alongside international law enforcement partners from Australia and New Zealand.
Valued at nearly $2 billion, this significant amount of methamphetamine was seized during high-profile drug raids in Nadi. Previous articles highlighted the challenges authorities face with such large seizures, with earlier court rulings deeming it impractical to store the drugs due to associated public safety risks.
The public release of detailed information about the destruction process will follow to further ensure accountability and transparency. This operation represents a hopeful step forward in combating drug trafficking in Fiji, as authorities work diligently to eliminate dangerous substances from circulation and enhance community safety. The collaborative spirit exemplified in this effort signifies a united front against drug-related crime, reinforcing the determination of law enforcement to foster a safer environment for all citizens.
