Fiji’s Hockey Teams Gear Up for Historic Tournament Debut

The Fiji Hockey Federation has officially announced its teams for the Axellerate Fiji Heritage Hockey Tournament, set to take place at the North Harbour Hockey Centre during the Easter weekend, from April 18-21, 2025. This event will bring together senior players from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including Māori, Indian, Asian, Pasifika, Fijian, and Punjabi communities.

The Fiji squads, both women’s and men’s, are coming into the tournament with strong momentum after their recent successes at the Oceania Pacific Cup, where they secured victories in both the Pacific Cup and the Intercontinental Cup only a few months ago. Among the notable players on the men’s team are Lala Ravatu, Diyankar Kumar, Akosita Adigoneca, Zander Frazzer, and Kirk Corrie, all expected to play pivotal roles in their campaign.

Fiji is making its debut in the NZ Heritage Hockey Tournament, which is significant as it provides a platform to showcase the nation’s hockey talent internationally. The teams have been intensively preparing, with women’s player Divyankar Kumar highlighting the rigorous training and strategic planning involved in transitioning from previous formats to the new competition structure.

The tournament is not just a competition but a celebration of heritage, community, and the unifying power of sports, bringing together various cultures and backgrounds in a shared pursuit of excellence. This inaugural participation in such a prominent international event is seen as a hopeful step for the growth of hockey in Fiji, inspiring future generations to engage with the sport.

As anticipation builds for this exciting event, the Fiji teams are poised to make an impactful debut, showcasing their skills and the spirit of teamwork that defines Fijian athletes.
