The Ministry of Justice in Fiji has taken a significant step in recognizing the contributions of women in the law and justice sectors during the celebration of International Women’s Day. This marks the first time such acknowledgment has been made, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering gender equity within these fields.
According to Permanent Secretary Selina Kuruleca, this initiative aims to motivate young women to consider careers in law and justice, which encompass a wide array of roles beyond just lawyers and judges. “We have had International Women’s Day celebrations in Fiji for many years, but women in law and justice have never been celebrated,” Ms. Kuruleca noted at the event. This partnership also involved collaboration with the Ministry of Women and various legal offices, emphasizing a collective effort to promote gender balance.
Ms. Kuruleca pointed out the importance of mentorship programs, scholarships, and professional development opportunities for individuals seeking to advance their careers in law and justice. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Solomon Islands government signifies an exchange of knowledge and capacity building for both men and women in the sector.
The celebration aligns with broader discussions around gender equality highlighted by previous articles, where leaders like Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, have underlined the necessity for collective action towards achieving gender equality. Kiran has stressed how empowering women not only addresses moral imperative but also serves as an economic driver, showcasing the importance of women’s roles across all sectors in society.
This hopeful initiative seeks not just acknowledgment but a systematic approach to change, fostering an inclusive environment where women are empowered to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields. Through various programs and collaborations, there is a strong commitment towards a future that acknowledges and supports women’s profound contributions to the legal framework and society at large.
There is optimism that these efforts will not only inspire young women but also create a ripple effect benefiting communities and the entire nation as Fiji moves towards a more equitable future.
