Former Fiji 15s representative and Fiji Rugby Union director Koli Sewabu has indicated that he is in line for a prominent executive role within the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). Speaking at the Leaders LEAD Symposium 2025 at the Sofitel Resort in Denarau, Sewabu shared insights about his career journey and aspirations.
After resigning from his role in Sports Diplomacy with Rugby Australia and Oceania Rugby in February of the previous year, Sewabu established his own consultancy firm, Backrow Management, based in Sydney. He has invested the past year in solidifying his position in sports consultancy, with a keen interest in contributing to Fiji Rugby.
Sewabu revealed that he has been shortlisted multiple times for a significant position within the Fiji Rugby framework over the last four to five years. He expressed optimism that this time could be different, attributing his strong conviction to recent positive spiritual reflections. “Everything seems to align, and I know something bigger is coming,” he stated, indicating a renewed sense of hope for his professional future.
As part of his recent efforts, Sewabu has been involved in negotiations with World Rugby and the Australian Government regarding potential funding for Fiji Rugby, aimed at enhancing its standing within the global arena. This comes at a time when the FRU is under new leadership following a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) where governance was officially transitioned to newly elected directors, including Sewabu among others.
The previous board made notable strides, including financial recovery and strategic operational changes, laying a solid foundation for ongoing growth. The newly elected board’s focus will be pivotal in nurturing talent and enhancing team performances, making Sewabu’s potential leadership role particularly significant.
Sewabu highlighted the importance of bringing in capable individuals who can foster positive changes within the rugby sector, especially given the negative media portrayal surrounding Fiji rugby in the past. This resonates with the FRU’s recent commitment to creating a legacy for future generations, emphasizing the collective spirit and dedication of all stakeholders involved in Fiji rugby’s journey.
This transitional phase not only reflects a changing landscape in Fiji Rugby governance but also brings forth renewed optimism for the sport’s future, suggesting that with the right leadership, the potential for success is undeniably bright.
