Consumers in Fiji are being encouraged to reconsider their purchasing habits to ensure sustainable living and environmental wellbeing. This vital message was highlighted during a workshop titled “Consumer Rights and A Just Transition to Sustainable Living,” organized by the Consumer Council of Fiji.

Ziyad Parvez, the Manager of Campaigns, Information, and Media for the Council, urged consumers to focus on products that are durable, recyclable, and minimally packaged to mitigate waste. He emphasized the direct correlation between consumer choices, community health, and environmental stewardship.

Shalend Singh, the Head of Services at Lautoka City Council, spoke on local government initiatives aimed at effective waste management and promoting environmentally friendly practices. He reinforced the important role every citizen plays in ensuring a sustainable future through responsible waste management.

The Consumer Council of Fiji is committed to promoting a realistic and accessible transition to sustainable living for all Fijians. This drive aligns with recent calls from the Council’s Chief Executive, Seema Shandil, emphasizing that sustainability must be a universal right rather than a privilege for the affluent. The importance of collaboration among government, businesses, and civil society was reiterated as essential for fostering this transition.

Previous events, such as World Consumer Rights Day, have also focused on making sustainability accessible to everyone, emphasizing that the shift toward eco-friendly products should not exacerbate economic disparities. The ongoing efforts signal a growing awareness in Fiji about the need for a green transition that includes everyone in society.

The collective action led by the Consumer Council reflects hope and optimism for a sustainable future, showing that together, communities can rise to meet the challenges posed by climate change and create a healthier environment for all.

By fostering a culture of sustainability, Fiji sets an example for other nations facing similar challenges, demonstrating that it is indeed possible to achieve economic growth while caring for the planet.
