Attorney General Graham Leung has unveiled bold proposals in Parliament aimed at cultivating future leaders in Fiji. In response to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s recent address, Leung underscored the urgent need to reform the school curriculum to incorporate civic values, human rights, and the rule of law. He highlighted the importance of instilling tolerance, understanding, and compassion in students, particularly within Fiji’s diverse cultural landscape.

Leung stressed that children should possess a profound understanding of their shared history while learning to respect their rights and those of others. During his speech, he echoed President Lalabalavu’s sentiments about the nation’s youth, stating, “they are the future of this nation, and their dreams, ambition, and hard work will define our destiny.” This emphasizes the critical role education plays in shaping young individuals for future leadership roles.

His remarks align with discussions from the recent Fiji Law Society Convention, where he pointed out the necessity of establishing a strong mentorship culture within the legal profession. Leung observed that many new entrants into the legal field often lack true commitment, lured instead by misconceptions about the glamour and financial rewards of a legal career. He called on seasoned legal professionals to mentor younger generations, preparing them to meet the challenges of a competitive legal landscape.

The dual emphasis on educational reform and mentorship initiatives paints a promising outlook for Fiji’s future. By embedding strong ethical values in education and nurturing young legal professionals, the nation has the potential to develop a leadership cadre that can adeptly navigate the complexities of tomorrow.

This new approach not only aims to enhance the quality of education and legal practice but also aspires to foster a generation of leaders who are not only competent but also morally grounded.
