The Fiji Dental Association (FDA) is taking proactive measures alongside the Consumer Council of Fiji to address the growing issue of illegal and unlicensed dental services. According to FDA president Dr. Parikshath Naidu, these unauthorized practices pose serious public health risks, particularly amid a concerning uptick in HIV cases in the nation.
Dr. Naidu emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that they had previously raised alarms about these dangerous services on March 23, 2024, and noted that the risks continue to escalate. He made it clear that individuals engaging in these unlawful practices will face significant penalties upon being caught, reflecting the organization’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
Dr. Naidu strongly advised the public to seek dental care only from licensed professionals. “Your life is worth more than a cheap trend,” he asserted, explaining that the costs associated with certified dental care guarantee both safety and skilled service. He urged licensed dentists to treat every patient with the utmost caution, especially in light of the ongoing health crisis, by adhering to the highest standards in dental care.
The FDA’s efforts are supported by previous warnings from health officials, including the Ministry of Health, which underscored the dangers of unregulated dental practices, such as improper dental gem applications. These illicit services often occur in informal settings, potentially leading to health complications such as infections and gum diseases.
As the FDA and Consumer Council work towards heightened regulation and consumer awareness, this collective initiative reflects a hopeful direction for improving dental health standards in Fiji.
