The Ministry of Education has announced the reintroduction of interviews for Year 13 students aspiring to enroll in teacher training institutions across Fiji’s four divisions. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity for recent Year 13 graduates, emphasizing the importance of qualified teachers in shaping the future of education in Fiji. Radrodro stated that with a rising demand for competent educators, the teacher training programs must be robust and attract the right candidates.

This initiative aligns with the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which seeks to enhance partnerships between TTIs and stakeholders, ensuring that graduates possess essential knowledge and skills to succeed in classrooms. The Minister reiterated the commitment to fostering a strong educational environment, highlighting that dedicated teachers are crucial to inspiring future learners.

The Ministry of Education has identified several priority areas where teaching positions are critically needed, including Primary Education, Special & Inclusive Education, and specialized sciences among others.

To assist potential candidates, the Minister noted that online applications to TSLS will close on January 31, 2025. Additionally, various scholarship programs for higher education are available, focusing on different fields of study, such as Counselling, Early Childhood Education, and Secondary Education in subjects like Mathematics and Biology.

The process will involve two rounds of interviews for eligible students, with specific dates to be communicated via email and phone notifications.

This initiative is a hopeful sign for the education sector in Fiji, as it aims to attract passionate individuals into teaching roles, ensuring that the next generation of students is equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The effort signifies a dedication to enhancing the quality of education, thereby positively impacting the future of the nation’s youth.
