Fiji is making significant strides in improving its national digital identification system with the formation of the National Identification (ID) Steering Committee. This committee, co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Arif Ali, has taken the crucial step of approving the drafting of legislation necessary to implement a standardized and universal national ID system.
Governor Ali highlighted that this collaborative initiative aims to create a digital ID framework that will ease access to essential services in critical sectors like healthcare, social welfare, finance, and education. Additionally, data from the McKinsey Global Institute suggests that nations with robust digital ID systems could see a considerable economic uplift, potentially enhancing GDP by 3% to 13%. The Asian Development Bank is set to support this initiative, which will feature regular updates to the Cabinet, following a detailed timeline of 36 months for implementation.
