The Fijian Cabinet has approved the initial redeployment of funds from the 2024-2025 Budget, amounting to FJ$28,087,026 (VIP), to help cover additional expenditures for both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Local Government. This strategic financial adjustment reflects the government’s commitment to address evolving needs in important public sectors.
A significant portion, FJ$23 million, will enhance the existing FJ$37 million allocation for Transport Assistance under the Ministry of Education. This funding increase is aimed at fully subsidizing the expected rise in bus fares for holders of blue and yellow cards, starting September 1, 2024.
Additionally, the Ministry of Local Government is set to receive FJ$4,087,026 to finalize projects at Govind Park. Moreover, FJ$1 million will supplement the previous FJ$500,000 assigned for preparatory works related to the upcoming Local Government elections.
These reallocations stem from savings identified due to delays in project implementation, which had resulted in lower than anticipated utilization of funds by the responsible agencies. This careful management exemplifies the government’s proactive approach to maintain essential services, particularly in education and local governance.
This redeployment not only highlights effective financial management but also reinforces the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and support for communities across Fiji. The responsiveness within the budgetary process showcases a dedication to adapting to ongoing needs, paving the way for strengthened public services.
