Fiji’s Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has recently defended the 2025–2026 budget, asserting that it serves as a practical and community-oriented plan rather than an election “giveaway,” as alleged by the opposition. Nalumisa emphasized that efforts are currently underway to reinstate local government elections, which have not been conducted since 2005. He revealed that draft regulations are being finalized in response to the 2023 amendments to the Local Government Act, which are essential for facilitating these elections.

In a pointed exchange with Opposition MP Praveen Kumar, Nalumisa referenced past commitments by the opposition leader Bala regarding municipal elections that went unfulfilled, which has added to the pressure for timely electoral processes. The Minister clarified that the responsibility for conducting municipal elections rests with the Fiji Elections Office.

The government’s budget, amounting to $34.7 million, aims to enhance local infrastructure, support the development of new towns, improve climate resilience, and upgrade waste management systems—all while paving the way for the much-anticipated return of local elections.

This eagerness to restore municipal elections aligns with sentiments expressed by community leaders. For example, Narayan Reddy, president of the Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association, has previously voiced frustration over the lack of funding for these elections while acknowledging positive aspects of the national budget, such as reductions in VAT and assistance for vulnerable populations.

As preparations move forward, the commitment to improving local governance through the resumption of municipal elections presents a hopeful opportunity for increased citizen engagement and accountability. By fostering local democratic processes, the government aims to better represent community needs and revitalize public trust in local governance.
