Fiji’s amateur boxing landscape is on an uplifting trajectory under the guidance of national coach Cam Todd. Known for developing world-class boxers, Todd expressed his excitement for nurturing grassroots talent, emphasizing his enthusiasm for the young athletes currently in training.
Since his arrival at the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association two years ago, Todd’s influence has substantially enhanced the sport. His leadership led to significant milestones, including Jone Davule’s success at the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, where Fiji secured its first gold medal in two decades.
Todd is optimistic about Fiji’s future in boxing, believing that the country is poised to excel in the Oceania region. He stated, “I’ve produced Olympic medalists and world champions, but I’m more excited about the young athletes I have in front of me now. They are poised to dominate amateur boxing throughout the Oceania region and beyond.”
Currently, Todd oversees a squad comprising aspiring boxers aged 14 to 17, alongside a senior elite team. Preparations for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Guam are already in motion, indicating a proactive approach to cultivating talent and competitive experience in international arenas.
Moreover, the recent success at the June 2024 Youth & Junior Oceania Boxing Championships in Tahiti, where the junior youth team brought home five gold, five silver, and one bronze medal, showcases the promising potential of this generation of boxers. This substantial improvement from mere bronze medals the previous year reflects the effective training and exposure provided by Todd and his team.
Todd has also championed the idea of increasing female participation in the sport, with the number of women in boxing rising from two to 15-20. This growth not only reflects a changing dynamic in the sport but also highlights the inclusivity Todd advocates.
As Fiji gears up for more international competitions in 2025, including possible participations in events like the USA Boxing International Open and the Australian Club Championships, the enthusiasm within the boxing community remains high. The support from local clubs and upcoming fundraising efforts showcases a collective commitment to strengthening Fiji’s boxing presence on a global scale.
The future appears bright for Fiji’s boxing scene, with Todd’s innovative coaching methods and unwavering dedication paving the way for the next generation of champions. This focus on youth development and inclusivity brings hope for a flourishing boxing culture in Fiji.
