Fiji Amateur Boxing is raising the bar this year as it prepares 35 local boxers for the highly anticipated Tri-Nations international event, marking a significant milestone in the country’s amateur boxing history. Scheduled for June 28-29 at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, this event is set to be the largest international amateur competition ever hosted in Fiji.

Head coach Cam Todd shared his enthusiasm for the event, noting that Australia is sending an impressive contingent of 31 boxers, while Samoa contributes a team of 12. The participation of a new boxer from New Zealand will add to the competitive mix, promising an exciting tournament for fans and participants alike.

Todd highlighted that extensive preparations are already in place, with local clubs actively training their boxers. He emphasized the importance of this event not only for the experience it provides to young athletes but also for their development. “This competition focuses on nurturing our younger boxers, who are key to the future of boxing in Fiji,” he stated. The age range of participants spans from 11 to 19 years old, all vying for the chance to showcase their talents on an international stage.

Additionally, the event will reveal the emerging talent from various new clubs, including a notable club from Nausori and another from Navua. These clubs have continued to integrate young male and female boxers into the national framework, which bodes well for the sport’s growth in Fiji.

The Western Division will also have a strong representation, with boxers from Ba, Nadi, and Lautoka participating in the tournament. Todd encourages the community to come out and support these aspiring athletes. “Whether or not you’re familiar with boxing, your presence can make a big difference in boosting their morale and encouraging them to achieve their goals,” he remarked.

This Tri-Nations event plays a crucial role in enhancing the local boxing scene, as it promises to showcase not just established talents but also the next generation of champions. With Fiji’s ongoing efforts to promote grassroots boxing and foster international relationships, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of amateur boxing in the country.

This event symbolizes not just a significant moment for local boxing but also underscores a shared commitment to developing sports and encouraging youth involvement across Fiji, paving the way for future successes on the international sports stage.
