The Fijian government is advancing its initiative to create a medicinal cannabis industry aimed exclusively at export. This move seeks to diversify the economy, create jobs, and position Fiji within the rapidly growing global medicinal cannabis market. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, provided insights during a parliamentary session regarding the ongoing consultations and feasibility studies that indicate significant economic potential.
Mr. Kamikamica emphasized the government’s vision to capitalize on global demand for medicinal cannabis products, thereby expanding Fiji’s economic base and generating new revenue streams. He stated, “The global medicinal cannabis industry is expanding rapidly, and Fiji has the potential to be a key player.” The initiative is expected to foster a dynamic ecosystem that supports agriculture, manufacturing, and research, ultimately contributing to job creation.
In alignment with Fiji’s broader economic strategy to boost export revenues and diversify beyond traditional sectors, the government aims to establish a sustainable industry. Since the Cabinet’s approval in August 2023, a taskforce comprising twelve government departments has been coordinating project efforts, which have included extensive consultations across the country.
From October 9 to November 28, 2024, 17 consultations were held across various divisions of Fiji, involving more than 500 community members, civil society representatives, and stakeholders. A substantial 75% of those surveyed expressed support for the legalisation of medicinal cannabis, indicating a strong public consensus on the initiative. The majority of supporters were male farmers aged 36 to 45, who see considerable potential for local community involvement in the industry.
Despite facing some setbacks in the legislative process, Mr. Kamikamica reassured the Parliament that the government aims to introduce the necessary bill in the upcoming year. He acknowledged the challenges faced, particularly regarding logistics and timing, but emphasized the commitment to ensuring thorough legislation that addresses potential concerns, such as theft and the illicit market.
To mitigate risks, the government plans to adopt rigorous security measures based on successful practices from countries like Australia. Once established, the medicinal cannabis industry is anticipated to boost exports, create employment opportunities, and foster expertise in medicinal research, representing a significant economic advancement for Fiji.
