In the warm sun of Laucala Bay, 16-year-old Ranadi Baleilomaloma is carving out her future in beach volleyball, contributing to a growing interest in the sport in Fiji. The Year-11 student from Suva Grammar School has seen significant personal transformation as she balances her athletic pursuits with her education.
Originally drawn to indoor volleyball, Baleilomaloma began her beach volleyball journey in Year 7, encouraged by Suva Volleyball vice-president Semaima Lagilagi, who pointed out the benefits of developing skills across both formats. “Beach volleyball is not very popular,” she candidly acknowledged, highlighting that although she initially preferred indoor volleyball, the challenges of the beach version have enhanced her overall game.
Her initial encounters with beach volleyball were tough, leaving her fatigued and sunburnt. “I won’t lie, I did not like it because it was so tough,” she reflected on her first experiences. However, as Baleilomaloma persevered, her fitness improved, leading to a renewed motivation towards her studies as well. “Training makes me want to go to school,” she shared, illustrating how sports can positively influence academic engagement.
Baleilomaloma’s growth in the sport resonates with the stories of other young athletes from Fiji, such as Vilisoni Loga and Wilson Kotoisuva, who have also ventured into beach volleyball after thriving in indoor formats. Their success in recent competitions emphasizes the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and embracing new opportunities. This rising trend among young players showcases the value of hard work and dedication in achieving sporting aspirations.
In addition to fostering athletic skills, Baleilomaloma’s progress reflects a broader cultural shift that encourages youth participation in sports alongside educational pursuits. This dual focus fosters not just young athletes, but also well-rounded individuals ready to tackle future challenges.
With the dedication and resilience Balleilomaloma and her peers show, there is hope for the continued growth of beach volleyball in Fiji, potentially transforming the sport into a prominent fixture in the local sports scene. Their journeys inspire future generations to pursue their passions, proving that with commitment and hard work, challenges can turn into stepping stones for success.
