Athletics Fiji faces a significant financial challenge as it prepares to send its athletes to the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled for June 29 to July 9, 2025. Each athlete who qualifies incurs a levy of $3,000, which poses a substantial burden on the federation, especially considering that 32 athletes have already made the final selection, with eight others designated as reserves.
Team manager Iva Volavola emphasized the importance of this event for the development of young athletes, aligning with Athletics Fiji’s vision to provide a clear pathway for their future in sports. “We need to take our young athletes overseas; we need to give them something to look forward to,” Volavola remarked, underscoring the vital role of international competitions in the athletes’ development.
To mitigate the hefty costs, Athletics Fiji has launched a fundraising initiative through the sale of lottery tickets priced at $2 each, alongside a book of 15 tickets for $30. This, combined with donations and sponsorships, is crucial in covering the levy and preparing for the games. Volavola has encouraged potential sponsors to step forward and assist in this endeavor, emphasizing that every contribution makes a difference.
Moreover, similar fundraising efforts have emerged across various sports disciplines in Fiji, highlighting a collective ambition to excel at the Pacific Mini Games. The community’s support is crucial, demonstrating a shared commitment to foster talent and improve Fiji’s representation in the regional sports arena.
Looking ahead, the proactive approach by Athletics Fiji and the involvement of the broader community offer a positive outlook for the athletes as they prepare for their participation in Palau. With the right training, support, and motivation, there is hope for a successful performance that could elevate Fiji’s status in international sports.
This fundraising initiative for the Pacific Mini Games not only reflects the financial challenges faced by sporting organizations but also serves as an inspiring narrative about unity and determination in the Fijian sports community.
