Fiji’s ambition to broaden its agricultural sector into international markets faces significant hurdles related to capability and market access, as reported by the Fiji Australia Business Council. Council President Himen Chandra emphasizes that, despite agriculture being recognized as a vital contributor to Fiji’s economic advancement, local businesses need to address inherent structural and operational challenges to thrive in the global arena.

Chandra pointed out that while sectors such as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are crucial for the economy, agriculture presents a more sustainable long-term opportunity due to Fiji’s abundant natural resources and production capabilities. He underscored that substantial progress in the agriculture sector is contingent upon enhancing business readiness and streamlining export methods.

“One of the biggest issues is ensuring we have the right capability, the right resources, and the right business attitude within the sector,” Chandra remarked. He noted many Fijian agricultural enterprises struggle to meet international standards, maintain a steady supply chain, and navigate the complexities of export logistics—essential factors for entering competitive markets like Australia.

Chandra advocates for forming Joint Venture partnerships with Australian and regional investors, which he believes will be crucial in overcoming these barriers. Such partnerships could equip local producers with necessary technical expertise, bolster infrastructure, and provide better access to established distribution networks.

“There is strong potential in the industry, but businesses must start looking at joint venture partners both in and out of Australia to help gain market access for Fijian products,” he added. The call for strategic collaboration echoes a broader sentiment among industry stakeholders, who have long recognized export readiness as a critical limitation confronting Fiji’s agricultural sector.

Although there is a growing demand for Pacific-grown products in international markets, inconsistent production capabilities and limited investment have hindered efforts for expansion. The Fiji Australia Business Council asserts that a focused collaboration among governments, private sector players, and international partners is essential to unlock the full potential of the agriculture sector and enhance Fiji’s competitiveness in export markets.

This initiative presents a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s agricultural landscape as the country seeks to harness its resources and strengthen its position in the global marketplace. With concerted efforts, the agricultural sector in Fiji can evolve, paving the way for economic growth and better integration into the international market.
