Teenagers from across Fiji convened at Albert Park in Suva for the AFL Fiji under-17 national trials yesterday, all vying for a chance to join the team heading to Australia for the Pacific Cup in September. These trials serve as crucial preparation for the tournament, which will showcase young talent in the growing sport of Australian Rules Football in the region.

Loata Vakausausa, the academy manager and development officer for AFL Fiji, expressed the selectors’ focus on identifying players equipped with the unique skills requisite for AFL—kicking, hand-passing, and agility on an oval field. She emphasized the importance of executing the skills honed during training, stating, “Everything they were taught in training, and hopefully they execute it today.”

Many participants have emerged from AFL Fiji’s youth development programs. Vakausausa mentioned that some come from challenging backgrounds, demonstrating the sport’s potential as a positive outlet. “A lot of kids come from different kinds of background. They were naughty kids, so we had to try and mould that particular attitude and just give them a little bit of discipline,” she noted. This AFL Academy serves as a safe haven, steering youth away from adverse influences.

Reflecting on her own experiences as a former player, Vakausausa reaffirmed the opportunities available for these talented youngsters. She encouraged them to pursue their dreams, underlining the presence of scouts at the event and the possibilities that can arise from playing for Fiji. The final squad for the Pacific Cup is expected to be announced today.

This trial and subsequent team selection represent a significant moment in the lives of these athletes, as participation in such events can lead to greater opportunities for growth and success, not just in sports but also in their personal development. The community’s support continues to be vital in fostering a generation inspired by AFL, contributing to the sport’s evolution in Fiji.
