Fiji’s Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Faces Political Pressure

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has stated that the public call for his resignation by the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society is an effort to overstep the Judicial Services Commission’s role following the Supreme Court’s ruling last Friday.

Rabuku mentioned that he has had two meetings with the JSC this week and they have devised a way forward together. He emphasized that there is a protocol in place to ensure the Office of the DPP maintains its current level of functioning during his leadership and that his departure occurs as smoothly as possible for the staff and everyone involved.

Rabuku asserted that he has not been instructed by the JSC to step down from his acting role. He acknowledged the Supreme Court’s authority as the highest court in the land and its opinion must be respected, regardless of his personal agreement. However, he clarified that the Supreme Court’s opinion was not an order for him to leave his position but to allow the JSC to follow the appropriate procedures that have been established.
