The recent announcement of the 2025–2026 National Budget in Fiji has sparked widespread optimism as it promises significant assistance for housing, aimed at benefitting countless families across the nation. Minister of Finance, Biman Prasad, emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing housing affordability and ensuring secure living conditions, particularly for low- and middle-income households.
Prasad referred to the new budget as a “budget of hope,” detailing a robust housing plan intended to tackle the serious concerns about home availability. The budget allocation includes funding for around 2,900 residential lots and over 1,800 homes in various regions across Fiji, including Nepani, Wainibuku, Wairabetia, Tacirua, and Veikoba. A specific provision of $15 million has been earmarked for the formalization of six informal settlements, which is expected to legalize housing leases for approximately 1,500 families.
A key aspect of this initiative is the continuation and enhancement of the First Home Buyers Grant, which permits families earning under $50,000 annually to access up to $30,000 for home construction. This move has been hailed by Prasad as a transformative opportunity, aiming to aid families in establishing stable and dignified living conditions. He stated, “We are not just building houses; we are building communities and restoring dignity.”
The broader strategies in the budget align with previous efforts to alleviate housing challenges faced by many Fijians, particularly in urban areas dealing with informal settlements.
