FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A Heavy Rain Alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group as a slow‑moving trough of low pressure continues to bring cloud, showers and periods of heavy rain. The system is expected to affect the islands for the next few days, with frequent showers and isolated thunderstorms in many areas.

For tonight, expect occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls across the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the interior and western half of Viti Levu (including Rakiraki, Tavua–Ba–Lautoka, Nadi–Sigatoka to Navua and interior areas of Ba–Ra–Nadroga/Navosa–Serua–Namosi), Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, western and interior parts of Vanua Levu (from Labasa–Nadogo, Dreketi–Seaqaqa and Bua–Lekutu), Lomaiviti and the southern Lau group. Elsewhere there will be cloudy periods with some showers and the chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms with heavy falls.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas, so communities in vulnerable locations should take precautions. Winds are expected to be moderate from the north to northwest, becoming gusty during heavier showers and thunderstorms. Seas will be moderate tonight.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, most places can expect occasional rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms. The risk of localised heavy falls and flash flooding will continue. Winds will tend northerly and increase to moderate to fresh at times, with gusts during heavy falls, and seas are likely to become moderate to rough. Daytime highs across the group are generally around 30–32°C with overnight lows in the low to mid‑20s.

Rotuma will see a different pattern: an east to northeast wind flow prevails, with a weak trough expected to affect the island from the east later today. Cloudy periods with some showers are forecast, with occasional showers developing later; winds will be moderate east to northeast and seas moderate. The outlook for Wednesday is for some showers with mild temperature variation.
