Idle land owned by the Agriculture Ministry in the Western Division is set to be revitalized into a significant agricultural hub, as announced by Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Inosi Kuridrani. The Legalega Research Station in Nadi, which has remained unused for several years, will now undergo redevelopment to accommodate research facilities, crop and livestock offices, and staff amenities.

This initiative aims to extend services to farmers in both the western region and the highlands, with the current crop and livestock offices located in Nadi town relocating to Legalega. This consolidation of services is expected to streamline operations and cut rental expenses for the Ministry.

During a recent visit to the west, Kuridrani recognized the potential of the Legalega Research Station, stating that the underutilised land could significantly enhance agricultural infrastructure for the future. Alongside this project, plans are in motion to introduce a model similar to the Navuso Agriculture Technical Institute at Navatumali in Navosa. This center will specifically focus on horticulture and beef farming, providing structured educational and certification programs aimed at empowering youth.

The initiatives are designed not only to strengthen farming practices but also to impart essential training, positioning young people for opportunities in agriculture. These programs will include the introduction of mechanised farming techniques tailored to highland climates, further fostering agricultural development.

Kuridrani highlighted the importance of effectively utilizing idle Ministry land to keep pace with the agricultural growth in the west. The new projects are anticipated to help farmers advance to commercial production levels while offering constructive alternatives for youth facing challenges in accessing education in urban areas. The development of the Legalega hub and Navatumali School is poised to become instrumental in rural skill development, community engagement, and sustainable agricultural progress in the Western Division.
