Fiji’s Ministry of Agriculture is intensifying its efforts to diversify crop production and support farmers in adopting high-value and resilient crops. According to Principal Research Officer Savenaca Cuquma, the research division is pivotal in identifying and developing new crops suitable for Fiji’s unique conditions. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural resilience and sustainability in the region.

One of the key focus areas is fruit production, which remains underdeveloped in Fiji. The Ministry is collaborating with the Taiwan Technical Mission to boost the cultivation of tropical fruits such as guava. This partnership aims to establish and upscale tropical fruit farming, highlighting the potential for economic and agricultural growth in Fiji’s fruit sector.

Moreover, the Research Division is concentrating on climate-resilient crops, particularly for arid zones in the Western Division and parts of Bua. These efforts include introducing robust pulses like cowpea, pigeon pea, mung beans, and peanuts, known for their high protein content and drought tolerance. Such crops provide a rich source of nutrition and can withstand the challenging conditions of Fiji’s dry zones.

Beyond fruits and pulses, the Ministry is actively promoting crop diversification. It encourages farmers to explore alternative crops such as rice, vegetables, and mushrooms. This initiative not only seeks to provide sustainable farming alternatives to traditional sugarcane but also aims to open up new income opportunities for farmers.

Farmers are advised to consult with research stations across the country to gain credible advice on suitable crop varieties and optimized production methods. By providing access to the latest agricultural innovations, the Ministry hopes to empower farmers with the tools needed to adapt to changing environmental conditions and market demands effectively.

These efforts align with the Ministry’s broader goals, previously discussed in similar articles, to invest in high-value crops and bolster sustainable agricultural practices. The initiatives underscore Fiji’s commitment to a resilient agricultural future, focusing on food security, increased income for farmers, and sustainable agricultural practices. Through strategic partnerships and innovative research, Fiji’s agriculture sector is on a hopeful trajectory towards sustainability and resilience.
