Fiji showcased its commitment to social development at a significant United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) event titled “Towards the World Summit for Social Development: Contributions from Asia and the Pacific,” held on 24 February 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. The delegation was led by Ambassador Amenatave Yauvoli, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to UNESCAP and Ambassador to Indonesia, alongside Anasilini Turaga, Senior Foreign Service Officer, and Vasiti Cirikiyasawa, Second Secretary at the Fiji Embassy in Indonesia.

Under the direction of Eseta Nadakuitavuki, Permanent Secretary of Women, Children and Social Protection, the Fijian team shared critical insights focused on equitable growth and inclusive development, particularly regarding the challenges posed by climate-related vulnerabilities. Ambassador Yauvoli emphasized the necessity of strengthening social protection systems to safeguard marginalized groups effectively.

The discussions at this event will contribute to a draft outcome document that will undergo negotiations during the forthcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York. This initiative ties into the broader context of the Second World Summit for Social Development scheduled for November 2025 in Qatar, which aims to revitalize dialogue around the principles established in the Copenhagen Declaration of 1995.

Fiji’s participation coincides with its ongoing efforts to implement strategies that address social, environmental, and economic challenges faced by Pacific nations. The gathering also serves as a precursor to the upcoming ESCAP Twelfth Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development, taking place from 25-28 February in Bangkok. Fiji’s consistent presence and active role in these discussions reflect its dedication to fostering regional cooperation and securing a sustainable future for all Pacific communities.

This engagement not only highlights Fiji’s focus on social welfare but also accentuates its commitment to aligning with global initiatives aimed at addressing pressing social issues, setting a hopeful tone for future progress in the region.
