Fiji Sugar Mill Opens 2025 Season with Optimism for Record Harvest

The Lautoka Sugar Mill is set to kick off its 2025 harvesting season today, marking an exciting time for sugarcane growers in the regions of Sigatoka and Ba, who have been preparing for weeks to deliver their harvest. Following Lautoka’s opening, the Labasa Sugar Mill will commence operations on June 17, with the Rarawai Mill in Ba scheduled to follow on June 24.

One of the notable farmers ready for the season is Rhamiza Khanam Ali from Lautoka, who has begun her harvest early. She expressed her hopes for a successful season, aiming to increase her yield from last year’s 350 tonnes to about 400 tonnes this year. Despite issues with the rising costs of planting and harvesting, Mrs. Ali is optimistic, having already engaged laborers for this year’s work at a rate of $30 per tonne.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) recently forecasted an increase in production for the 2025 season, with a projected crush of 1.53 million tonnes—up 15 percent from 2024’s total of 1.33 million tonnes. FSC Chairman Nitya Reddy emphasized the need for collaboration among growers and stakeholders to achieve these targets. He remarked, “The industry can no longer be treated as a cauldron of conflict and confrontation,” highlighting the commitment required for a successful season.

Previously, the Sugar Industry Tribunal had confirmed the timeline for the sugarcane crushing operations, which enhances confidence among producers. Optimistic projections suggest that with favorable weather and effective coordination, the sugar industry in Fiji can rebound and thrive this season.

This renewed energy in the industry underscores the collective spirit of innovation and resilience in addressing past challenges. As growers like Mrs. Ali prepare their harvest, the potential for a fruitful season ahead brings hope for prosperity within Fiji’s vital sugar industry. With concerted efforts, stakeholders believe they can turn the tide and foster a more stable agricultural landscape for the future.
