The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) is assessing a proposal from the Education Ministry to appoint Ratu Meli Nacuva, the Permanent Secretary, as the chairperson of the union. FSSRU vice president Savenaca Muamua clarified that the decision made at the recent Annual General Meeting remains in effect while the union prepares for a special general meeting, aimed at reviewing this proposal within a 21-day notice period.

Muamua emphasized the significance of the Permanent Secretary’s role, noting that he holds the authority to grant approvals from the Ministry of Education for all sports in the country. He stated, “The PS is the only person that grants the approvals by the Ministry of Education for all sports… So when the PS comes in to take on that leadership role in all sports in Fiji, that’s good because he’s the one who’s going to do the approval at the end.”

However, Muamua insisted that any appointment would need to follow a constitutional review and be adopted at the Annual General Meeting before taking effect. The process for this review is set to begin shortly, with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Education and the Fiji Rugby Union invited to provide their input.

This moment represents a pivotal point for the FSSRU as it navigates potential changes in leadership which could positively impact the future management of rugby at the school level in Fiji. The inclusive approach of seeking feedback from various stakeholders is promising, suggesting a move towards collaboration and support within the sport.

Continuing from this, the FSSRU’s decisions come in the backdrop of significant governance changes taking place within Fiji’s overall rugby structure, such as those seen in the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). These reforms aim to enhance professional management of rugby operations, emphasize union representation, and eliminate government and Prime Minister nominations from the board. Such moves collectively highlight a growing commitment to improving governance and accountability across Fiji’s rugby landscape, fostering an environment where stakeholder engagement can lead to a more robust and effective rugby community.
