The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week. This news was confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu, who indicated that offers have been extended to potential candidates and they are currently awaiting responses.
Among the applicants is the renowned rugby sevens legend Waisale Serevi, who has shown interest in the Fijiana 7s coaching position after his recent coaching experience with the Indian Women’s 7s team. In addition, former player Sireli Bobo has been mentioned as a potential candidate, although Nayacalevu has not disclosed the names of all applicants.
Serevi is expected to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad, marking a commitment to developing young talent in Fijian rugby. Recently, Serevi was appointed the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, reflecting his continued influence within the rugby community.
The vacancy for the Fijiana 15s head coach position arose after the departure of Mosese Rauluni in October of last year. Rauluni had a significant impact, leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will step into significant shoes, needing to build on this legacy.
Similarly, the Fijiana 7s head coach role has been vacant since the non-renewal of Saiasi Fuli’s contract in December after five impactful years, during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Nayacalevu emphasized the intention to select the best candidates to enhance the teams’ performances and achieve improved results on the international stage. This transitional period in coaching roles is viewed as crucial for the development of women’s rugby in Fiji, with an optimistic outlook for upcoming announcements.
The shift in leadership presents a unique opportunity for the FRU to bolster its women’s teams and instill fresh strategies that can elevate their status in international rugby. With the anticipation surrounding these appointments, the announcement signals a promising future for Fijian rugby, both for athletes and upcoming talent.
