Fiji Red Cross Urges Communities to Combat Rising Disease Threats

The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially those in the Western Division, to take urgent precautions against climate-sensitive diseases following recent flooding. As floodwaters begin to recede, the risk for diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD) typically increases at this time.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat of flooding is decreasing, the potential for disease remains significant. “We are urging everyone to implement simple but crucial steps to protect themselves and their families,” she stated.

In the last three days, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and assisted over 295 individuals in both evacuation centers and their communities in the Western Division. They have distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to those impacted.

The organization’s teams in the Western Division are continuing to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary support. There are currently identified hotspot areas for LTDD, making it even more vital for local residents to remain vigilant and take preventive actions.

The Fiji Red Cross is advising anyone experiencing symptoms of these diseases, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue, to seek medical attention promptly, as early treatment can be life-saving.

Additionally, Ms. Dawai expressed heartfelt appreciation to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of water, which is crucial for affected families during this recovery phase.

“Clean drinking water is vital at this stage, and this contribution will significantly assist the communities,” she said. The Fiji Red Cross also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners during this critical response, emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships in effectively addressing such challenges.

By taking proactive measures, the Red Cross aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and aid communities in their recovery process.

In summary, this news highlights the ongoing efforts of the Fiji Red Cross Society in managing health risks following flooding and underscores the importance of community vigilance and support in the face of adversity. The collaborative spirit and generous contributions from local businesses and partners shine a light on humanity’s resilience and capacity to overcome challenges together.
