Samoa’s Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt is hospitalised in Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital after being medically evacuated from Apia last week, the latest development fueling anxiety in the island nation as officials provide only limited information about his condition.
Acting Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molioo confirmed the prime minister was admitted to Middlemore’s Coronary Care Unit with concerns involving his heart and lungs shortly after arriving in Auckland via Auckland International Airport and disembarking at a private facility. Local media outlets have withheld detailed medical information, citing patient privacy and ethical considerations, and government officials have yet to release a full medical update.
Laaulialemalietoa had told the public in a Facebook livestream before departing Samoa that he was travelling for “overdue medical checks,” but did not indicate the urgency of the trip. The decision to medevac him to a specialist facility in Auckland and his transfer directly to the CCU marks a significant escalation from that earlier explanation and is the central new development prompting calls for clearer information.
Opposition leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said he sympathised with the prime minister and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, noting that an admission to Middlemore’s CCU is typically associated with critical care. While commending Mulipola for the information already shared, Tuilaepa urged the government to provide more consistent updates. “There have been no announcements… the country is sitting here praying,” he said, reflecting widespread public concern.
Public reaction has been intense on social media, with supporters posting well-wishes and false AI-generated images circulating that purported to show the prime minister’s condition. Officials and media have sought to curb misinformation by emphasising that no verified images or details have been released.
Laaulialemalietoa was expected to attend a cultural event in Auckland but did not appear, and there was no immediate explanation from government spokespeople. As the nation waits for an official medical briefing, the prime minister’s hospitalization represents the most consequential public-health-related interruption to Samoa’s leadership since he took office, underscoring why Opposition and the public are pressing for transparency about his prognosis and expected recovery timeline. The government has said further information will be released when appropriate and in keeping with medical privacy.
