Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has disclosed that he recently met with leaders of the National Federation Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party to discuss engagements with nine Independent MPs. Speaking to FijiLive, Rabuka mentioned his conversations with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka.

Rabuka noted that while he did not divulge extensive details, both leaders were receptive to the idea. “I consulted them this morning. And as far as I am concerned, the Coalition Partners are strong as it was formed initially,” he said.

The Prime Minister confirmed that his meeting with the nine Independent MPs took place yesterday. Although no formal agreements were made, the purpose of the meeting was to seek the support of these MPs for Rabuka as the Leader of the Government from the Opposition.

Rabuka mentioned his intent to discuss with the Speaker of Parliament the possibility of providing a separate facility for the nine MPs if they are not supported by the Opposition Caucus, ensuring they can effectively serve their constituents.

Furthermore, Rabuka did not rule out the possibility of amending the 2013 Constitution, contingent on the cooperation of the Independent MPs. “That can be a result of their cooperation,” he added.
