The Fiji Police Force has announced plans to recall at least 10 retired or resigned officers to strengthen its investigative teams. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu outlined that this initiative focuses on enhancing skills and training within the force, rather than a broad reinstatement of all former staff.
Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the importance of incorporating experienced personnel into ongoing investigations, stating, “We need experienced personnel to assist and, in a way, train our investigations team.” The recalled officers will take on crucial roles, such as assistant superintendent, inspector, sergeant, and corporal, using their expertise to support current teams under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner of Crime Mesake Waqa.
Candidates for recall must fulfill specific requirements, including a minimum of 15 years of service in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the completion of CID Level 2 training, with Level 3 training encouraged. Additionally, they must not be involved in any unresolved criminal investigations and are required to provide a doctor’s certification confirming their physical and mental fitness.
This initiative ties into earlier efforts by the Fiji Police Force to recruit experienced former officers to create specialized units dedicated to tackling cold cases and complex crime investigations. These measures reflect the force’s broader commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and public safety by bringing back experienced retirees.
The integration of seasoned officers is expected to not only bolster ongoing investigations but also create a collaborative environment that encourages knowledge transfer and strengthens the skills of newer officers. This initiative signifies a positive step for law enforcement in Fiji, markedly enhancing the police’s effectiveness and reinforcing community trust.
As the crime landscape continues to evolve, the proactive approach taken by the Fiji Police Force in addressing safety challenges is hopeful. This effort demonstrates a commitment to effective policing and justice, promising a safer future for the community.
