The Veiliutaki Framework Lead Self Course commenced on February 24, 2025, organized by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) at the Centre for Training and Development in Nasese. The program was inaugurated by Lieutenant Colonel Pio Varawa, the Chief Staff Officer for Service Support.
In his opening remarks, Lt Col Varawa highlighted the essence of leadership, stating that it transcends titles, ranks, or social status. Instead, he defined true leadership as the capacity to inspire, motivate, and guide others. He noted that the focus of this five-day course would be on cultivating strategic self-awareness, which entails a deep understanding of one’s strengths and weaknesses. “Only through this self-understanding can you effectively manage and lead others,” he emphasized.
Participants of the course include over twenty personnel from the RFMF alongside civilian members from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Lt Col Varawa encouraged attendees to embrace ongoing personal growth beyond the duration of the course, stressing that effective leadership begins with the ability to lead oneself.
This course is supported by the New Zealand Defence Force and aims to enhance leadership skills significantly within the RFMF and the broader community. The emphasis on self-awareness and personal development is crucial not only for individual growth but also for building effective, adaptive leaders who can navigate complex challenges.
This initiative aligns with prior discussions around leadership within the RFMF, particularly those articulated by Commodore Humphrey Tawake, who emphasized strategic vision and effective communication as vital components in modern military leadership. By fostering a culture that nurtures leadership skills, the RFMF is taking significant steps towards building a resilient, accountable military force prepared for the challenges of the contemporary strategic landscape.
Overall, the launch of the Veiliutaki Framework Lead Self Course reflects a hopeful investment in the future of leadership within Fiji’s military and highlights a commitment to nurturing leaders who are equipped to inspire and guide their teams effectively.
