Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on residents to heed the warnings from the National Disaster Management Office and the Fiji Meteorological Service as Tropical Cyclone Rae approaches. Speaking outside Parliament, Rabuka emphasized the importance of moving to higher ground while daylight allows, advising citizens to prioritize their safety.
Currently, TC Rae is tracking south-southwest towards the Lau Group and is situated just east of Vanua Levu. The cyclone is predicted to intensify further, prompting heavy rain warnings to remain in effect across the entire Fiji group. Rabuka assured that the government is poised to assist affected communities and agencies as they prepare for the storm.
The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued additional warnings, including a hurricane alert for the Moala group and storm warnings for the Lau Group and other eastern islands. Strong wind alerts have also been released for parts of Vanua Levu and surrounding areas. Residents are advised to secure properties and stock emergency supplies in anticipation of potential flooding, especially in low-lying regions.
This weather event underscores the importance of community preparedness. Past experiences with similar weather disturbances highlight how collective action can effectively mitigate the impacts of severe storms. As Fijians rally together to face TC Rae, their resilience and unity during trying times stand out as a beacon of hope.
By adhering to safety protocols and staying informed through local updates, residents can navigate this challenge while demonstrating the strong spirit that characterizes communities throughout Fiji.
