Fiji’s Cabinet has announced the lifting of the ban on the harvest and trade of bêche-de-mer, a decision that comes with strict conditions aimed at ensuring sustainability. The harvesting of approved species will be permitted for a limited period, specifically from February 1, 2026, to May 30, 2026. Following the harvesting phase, licensed traders will have an additional two months, until July 30, 2026, to process and export the product.
To guarantee that sustainability practices are maintained, the Ministry of Fisheries will actively monitor both the harvesting and trade processes. This measured approach not only aims to support the livelihoods of those who rely on this trade but also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding marine resources for future generations. By balancing economic needs with environmental responsibility, Fiji is setting a precedent for sustainable fisheries management.
