The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced new measures to enhance oversight during future drug destruction operations in Fiji. In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, the ministry aims to ensure that robust environmental safeguards are enforced, particularly following challenges that arose during the combustion of 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine earlier this year.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary of the ministry, emphasized the necessity of having an operational environmental management plan in place before commencing such sensitive processes. He noted that concerns were raised after smoke emissions from an outlet pipe during the previous destruction operation led to complaints from nearby residents in Nakasi.

“The key takeaway from this situation is that planning ahead is crucial. We must ensure the infrastructure is appropriately set up before we engage in these operations,” Dr. Michael stated.

Moving forward, the ministry has confirmed that environmental officers will be present at all drug destruction sites to monitor compliance with pollution and environmental standards. This change reflects a commitment to maintaining public trust and ensuring accountability during high-risk operations.

Dr. Michael praised the cooperative efforts of the Fiji Police under Commissioner Tudravu, highlighting the importance of a strong partnership to uphold environmental integrity. He reassured the public that environmental standards, including site inspections and adherence to management plans, will be strictly followed in all upcoming operations.

This proactive approach not only strengthens Fiji’s resolve in tackling the illegal drug trade but also reinforces the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and the environment.

The collaborative efforts showcased between the ministry and the police illustrate a unified strategy aimed at enhancing community safety. Through continuous improvements, Fiji can hope for a future marked by decreased drug-related threats and a commitment to environmental stewardship and public well-being.
