The Labasa High Court has handed down a life sentence to 34-year-old Kositino Latianara for the murder of 27-year-old taxi driver Amitendra Kumar, with the incident taking place at Waisali Hill in Cakaudrove in 2024.
During the judgment, Justice Lee Burney emphasized the severity of the case, categorizing it within the high levels of murder due to the nature of the crime, the offender’s intent, and the use of a knife as the murder weapon. The court heard that on March 18, 2024, Latianara attacked Kumar, inflicting multiple stab wounds and ultimately slitting his throat with a knife he had brought to the scene. The motive behind this brutal act allegedly stemmed from Kumar owing Latianara money.
A post-mortem examination indicated that Kumar succumbed to his injuries, suffering from severe blood loss and internal bleeding as a result of the stabbing. Following the incident, Kumar’s abandoned taxi was located along Waisali Hill, prompting a search that ultimately led authorities to discover his body further down the hillside.
Justice Burney noted that Latianara had spent nearly two years in remand since his arrest, which may factor into his eligibility for parole after serving 20 years of his life sentence. This sentencing reflects a commitment to justice and the legal system’s determination to address violent crimes effectively, as it aims to provide closure for the victim’s family and community.
